At The FoodCentres Project, our mission is to increase food access and food literacy in Centre County, PA through food-based learning and service projects.
The project received seed funding in 2015 through the annual CentreInspires grant from the Centre Foundation as a partnership between New Leaf Initiative (a social entrepreneurship incubator), the Food Reclamation Network (a gleaning network), and several other relief organizations focused on food justice.
We successfully opened the Penns Valley Food Centre in early May. The PVFC is an innovative multi-use space including a community learning garden, a walk-in refrigerated container for storing produce, and a kitchen. The whole facility is designed with the community in mind, and doubles as a space for events and activities.
Through the work of dedicated volunteers, the Penns Valley Food Centre is able to operate as a site for a gleaning network, a produce delivery service for local food pantries, a venue for gardening and cooking workshops, and more!
But why stop there? The FoodCentres Project was designed to grow–we hope to open more Food Centres all over the county, as well as designing a mobile unit for on-the-go education and engagement programming. By engaging communities all over Centre County, we are working to make our area a healthier, happier place.
